I would sometime imagine myself trying spool my life on to the wheel. Like I was measuring how far I still need to go before things would stop getting worse. I always knew the card meant the circle of life, I simply forgot to think about my placement on the wheel. How during my lifetime I will experience both high and low periods.

During this last year that image has helped me stay centered. After a pity party or two I could accept that it was my turn for my fortune to turn downwards. I don't picture my life as me running on a wheel like some hellish treadmill. No, I picture its more like I am a wheel and I am steering down a path. I can't avoid the low periods but I am stubborn enough to believe I can help determine how long they last.

"Gam zeh ya'avor" -- "This too shall pass"

Looking back at this last year I have come to realize I have been very fortunate in my misfortune. There were quite a few events in this past year that have been quite humbling for me. Some I saw coming and then others that just blind-sided me. I didn't always take these hits gracefully and my friends and family put up with my sullenness, my sometimes sharp words and my angst. There have been many times this last year that I have stopped to think about how fortunate I am to have so many good people in my life. It warms me from my heart outwards to know that I am loved and cared for by these people.

I like looking for the good in people; I find it more pleasurable than always picking out the negative. In this last year I saw people's goodwill come out of the woodwork. I was laid-off in November '07, so my friends decided we were not going to exchange gifts at Christmas because money was tight for me. Instead they surprised me and they all bought me a gift. And because they truly know me, they gave me very practical gifts that I would appreciate. My whole family stepped up to the plate and gave me everything I had wanted but never asked for. When my apartment building was flooded, James didn't hesitate to pick me up from the emergency drop site or to offer up his home for however long I might need to stay. The next day I went to work, Lisa, a woman I work with and have slowly gotten to know invited me into her home. She said she had a spare bedroom if I wanted it. I stayed there for 18 days and her family never made me feel unwanted or intrusive. It was amazing. This is only a few moment this year that makes me thankful and proud to know these people.

This last year has taught me a lot about myself and what I want. How much I need and what I place importance on. I feel like I am waking up.

So I have been out of my home for 17 days now due to the flooding that happened in the middle of September. I now have electric, gas and I'm just waiting on the water heater and then my place will be livable again. It just wears me down having to go back and forth everyday to check on my cats and see how much farther they have gotten. It feels odd to leave my place at nine at night to go somewhere else to sleep and shower.

I definitely lost everything in my storage. My landlord scraped everything without notifying us which bugs me, I know the tenants in the other buildings in our section were able to rescue some of there belonging but we weren't given that option. So now I am stuck wondering exactly what items I have lost. I know I have lost all my christmas ornaments, which is the worst part for me because most of them were given to me or were mementos from friends' weddings. It actually made me cry, which if you know me isn't something I do often. I also lost all my Halloween costumes that I had collected over the years and most of my winter wear.

So my apartment complex was declared an emergency evacuation site, the local fire department shipped us out via motorboats and then they loaded us into a school bus and took us to a location on Lake & 53 where my brother met me. I packed a bag with about 3 days worth of clothes. I had to leave my pets because I couldn't take them anywhere, my sister-in-law is allergic to them. I left enough food for them for about 4 days but I hope I will be able to return before then. I feel guilty about leaving them but I sure they will be fine.

By 11am Saturday morning the water had reach thigh high in some spots and I was told that the Des Plaines River hadn't crest yet but was expected to at 3pm and that we should expect another foot or two of rising water. I know for certain that the majority of my Christmas ornaments and Halloween costumes are ruined. My storage area was in the sub-basement of my building. Water had filled that area to capacity before I was evacuated. According to the news report this morning my town had recieved a total of 9.5 inches in rain fall. It did not help that I live right next to Salt Creek.

I do appreciate the fact that I have family who lives so close to me, I am staying at my brother's right now, sleeping on his couch. The majority of the roads going to my work are blocked because of random flood spots. It took me a hour and forty-five minutes to get to work today when on a normal slow day it takes me at most twenty-five minutes. I myself was feeling very frustrated with all the stop and creep that was going on. Fortunately I was able to see the humor in it all because when I tried to change lanes and the guy I was going to be infront of honked his horn viciously and sped up so that I couldn't get infront of him so I got behind him instead. Then I proceeded to watch him lose it everytime he had to stop. He was shaking his head, pounding the steering wheel, swearing, jerking his whole body and leaning over his passenger seat to see that no one else was going either. I was watching him just waiting for him to snap and drive down the median. Its the small things that make you smile.

Great America....eh not so great

Great America, not so great this year.

My friend David & I have purchased a pass for the last 4 years and we have always had a great time going. This year has not started off being a stellar year. The first time we go, we played in Hurricane Harbor til about 5 then headed off to ride the much advertised Dark Knight Ride. We step in line only to be told that it will be 120 minutes because that sound so much better than 2 HOURS and then I'm spotted in the crowd by a park employee and told we can no longer bring our backpacks to the ride and we will have to get out of line and put our items in a locker that cost a dollar. It turns out there is a new rule that on any major rides you can't have your totes with you. They will no longer provide a bin for you to put your stuff in before you get on the ride because apparently most people try to take their stuff with them on the ride itself and all the falling debris hits other people. So now all the loose items people will be sticking in their pockets so they don't have to have a bag to check for a dollar each time they want to ride a major ride will now fall out and hit others, because they want to save their money so they can buy a 20 oz bottle of coke for $3.50. Yes, I now see the wisdom of banning backpack & totes. So after loosing our place in line and getting back in so now our wait is technically up to 130 minutes we are herded in a room with about 6 to 8 televisions that are playing some music videos and ads for Great America, which pisses me off. First because they are also pumping different ads and music over the intercom at the same time so you can't hear the music videos and the overhead music and ads only stop long enough for you to listen to the Great America ads they play on the tv's. Now I understand that you want to reaffirm for the people who are in the cattle shoots why it Great to go to Great America but making us watch your ad over and over again isn't the way to do it especially if you have shuffled in older MTV awards shows of Vanilla Ice singing "Ice Ice Baby" wearing that hideous sequined American flag house pants and suit jacket. Now I know I never wanted to remember 1991 MTV awards and I am sure neither does Mr. Vanilla Ice. I was torn between feeling a little pity for the man who wreck most white boys' chance at becoming a respected rapper (Kid Rock) and the fact that I had to deal with the fashback of high school where alot of my fellow classmates knew that song verbatim. I felt very sorry for David that day, I don't do well when I get frustrated and I tend to entertain myself by inflicting my companions with my sense of humor and pestering ways. So we finally get to the end of the line it has been about 140 minutes and over the intercom we hear the announcer say that the ride is having technical difficulties and they don't know how long it will be. So at 155 minutes they have two sixteen year old boys come out to us and try and chat the crowd up, you could feel this was not their choice, they started telling everyone that the ride wasn't all that great, that is was more of a kids ride. Similar to the Cajun Cliffhanger ride but in the dark. It amazed me how much these kids didn't seem to mind that they were telling a group of people who have just waited over 165 minutes to ride this ride that it suck and essentially they have wasted their time. The sixteen year old boy closes to us decides that David is kind of cute and want to flirt with him, p.s. David has got about 7 cool points to my 5. Finally we give up and leave the line, we only had 30 minutes left in the park before it closed. We got one ride in. Like I said not so great.

Now we went again last Sunday, all bright eyed and hopeful that the rain would go away and/or that it will influence others to either leave the park or not go at all. We were wrong on all accounts. As you could guess we forgoed trying to ride the Dark Knight and decided to ride some of our favorites instead. But between the bouts of bone chilling rains and that fact that each time it rained the rides would shut down and we would have to leave the lines because the employees didn't know how long until they would be up and running again we got on 4 rides that day. It been brutal so far but I have always loved a challenge and we have season passes and we intend to get our moneys worth. So we are going back in two weeks, wish us luck.

Well I have official registered and I am now a student at Harper College. I am queasy and excited at the same time. I will start classes in the fall, hopefully I will have a little financial aid to help ease the burden of paying for school. Am now crossing fingers and holding my breathe. Okay so I let out my breathe, besides I was becoming too light headed anyways. Who am I kidding, I haven't even received my stimulus check yet. I will be fast tracking my education so that means one night a week for 4 hours and I get my degree in two years. I hope its a fast two years. Since I am starting over again I haven't chosen a which degree to go for, so I will get my basic requirements out of the way first. I can't wait to see what I will learn and who I will meet.

You know how sometimes people on your friends list post about stuff going on in their life, and all of a sudden you think "Wait a minute? Since when are they working THERE? Since when are they dating HIM/HER? since when???" And then you wonder how you could have missed all that seemingly pretty standard information, but somehow you feel too ashamed to ask for clarification because it seems like info you *should* already know? It happens to all of us sometimes.

Please copy mine below, erase my answers putting yours in their place then post it in your journal! Please elaborate on the questions that would benefit from elaboration! One-word answers seldom help anyone out."

1. First Name:
Ann Marie, its pretty simple right almost every girl has one or the other as a middle name. It must be too simple because people are constantly trying to add or take away vowels. So I am also called, Ann, Anna, (God for bid Annie!, only people who are at a distance from me try that one.) Anna Maria, Emory, Amy, AM.

2. Age:
33, no major life changes so I pretty much feel like I'm 25, I can drink, I have cheap insurance and I can rent a car without a parents signature.

3. Location:
Addison, IL and its circling Counties. I like it here, there is a little of everything I want here.

4. Occupation:
I work in the Real Estate business. I was recently laid off and now rehired by the same company. I am an overqualified receptionist that is going insane but I have paycheck.

5. Partner:
I have a platonic husband, "so all the work none of the fun". Well thats not true we go on vacations together and we go to Great America, I am just afraid to cross the great divide. He wants kids.
.

6. Kids:
none, I believe I am too impatience and scared about how much I could screw one up.

7. Brothers/Sisters:
I am the baby of the family but it seems as if I am the oldest. I have a sister who is 11 years older than me, she lives in CA and it shows. Most of my friend haven't met her and never seen a picture because she is one of those people who get very irate if you do take a picture of her. They believe she is fictional. I have two brothers that now both live in IL. One is married and has one son and is working on getting another kid the other is close to becoming a shut-in.

8. Pets:
I have three cats, I acquired two by accident. I received my first cat as a birthday gift and I picked her out. Her name is Madison and she is the only one I raised from a kitten and she is the worst of them all which only helps reaffirm the fact I shouldn't raise anything. My second cat is Baby, she use to belong to an old roommate of mine who after I had moved out threatened to put Baby to sleep because she had pee'd on her comforter. So naturally I took her in and she is the sweetest of them all. My third cat is named King, he was a stray outside my work. He was originally going to go live with a friend of mine down state but after I had already taken him to the vet and paid the bill my friend calls me up and says "Yeah I talked with my husband and we agree getting a cat wouldn't be good right now"

9. List the 3-5 biggest things going on in your life:
- I am waiting for a position to open up or get a new job completely so I can stop having to tell people when I have to go to the washroom. I have stopped drinking water at work because I feel guilty about dragging people way from thier desk so I can go.

- I am working at saving so I can purchase my own home

- I am trying to trim down and get healthier

- I am going through the process of registering for school and figuring out how I can use financial aid to do it.

10. Where and for what did you go to school?:
I started at C.O.D. thinking it was like High School, but no one called your parents when you ditched so I ditch alot and never completed a degree. When and lived in CA for alittle bit and went to a junior college there, I did enjoy that but then I moved home. I later went to massage therapy school but I was working two jobs and dating, and going out dancing and I really wasn't focussed at all. I hate that about myself. When things come to easy I disregard the fact that I need to pay attention and then I come to realize I missed huge portions of needed information.

11. Parents?
My mother, Marjorie, Mitzi as my dad calls her. She is a German farm girl from a family of 8 sisters and 1 brother. She is where I got my work ethic. As a way to spend quality time with us my mom would often take James & I to her work on the weekend so we could colate or do data entry for her. I did enjoy it but I still hate big black binder clips because I could never open them when I was little. I can't say much about her she is a hard one to pin down.

My father, John, Jack to his family, he is Irish boy from Brooklyn from a family of all boys. Only two out of the 4 are still living. He likes country music and Irish folk music and has a swagger to his walk. He isn't handy but likes to think he is. He is a big lover of the COSTCO. I think that is how he gets his third or fourth meal of the day in, by going around to all the food sample tables. He is always looking for a deal, the problem is he usually can't spot the lack of quality.

12. Who are some of your closest friends?
Debbie is my marathon phone friend & the one I think I trust the most. Dave is my best guy friend and who I trust to show me new experiences. He is the one that pushes me and dares me to be more daring. D is my longest friend and we can just be. Guck I have know since junior high and as introduced me to things I never knew to look for and she still does. Marci is the one who i feel girly & sisterly to, something neither of us had with our own sisters.

I baby-sat my 3 year old nephew last Friday; I now know what drives me crazy about young kids. They don’t usually ask thoughtful questions, as in they thought about what they wanted to know, couldn’t come up with the answer so they ask someone. No, kids just ask for the answer and then wait and then ask again. Though I don’t think it is kid specific per se, because I’ve experience this joy with adults as well. As I type this I can hear my mother’s voice saying to me when I was little that I talk just to hear myself talk, I now understand why she said that so often. I guess some people don’t grow out of it, I can only hope that my nephew does.

I went to a double feature drive-in with Dave last Saturday night. That was fun, the weather was perfect. We saw the new Adam Sandler movie & Indiana Jones movie. They were both very funny and I kept squirming during the Sandler movie. Lots of innuendos and implied sex with the geriatric, later that night my neighbor downstairs was having a party that lasted until 6am. Of course some stupid heifer had to drunk dial her man or her ex-man to scream f**k you every third sentence for 20 MINUTES. I finally went out to my balcony in my tank & panties to tell her to “please be quite”. She did for about 25 minutes and I fell asleep for a bit till she sobered up a little around 4:50 to start raising her voice again about how she wasn’t ready to go home. By then I had had enough, I again went out to my balcony and I told her she need to shut the F**K UP, since I have been listening to her screeching since 3:30! If hadn’t already entered the “white trash” zone when I went out in my panties and tank then the 5 am bitchfest definitely pushed me over the line. I am now scouting for some pink flamingos so I can stake them into my balcony. Please let me know if you find any on sale.
